Co-sleeping and bed-sharing are sometimes referred to as the same thing. However, they are a little bit different. Co-sleeping is generally sleeping near your baby, which could be in the same room or bed. Bedsharing is sleeping in the same bed as your baby. Below I will be referring to bed-sharing.
Co-sleeping can be beneficial to your breastfeeding journey. As long as you plan before you co-sleep and you’re comfortable that your baby has a safe space sleeping with you.
Tips for co-sleeping/bed-sharing
❌No smoking or drinking before you share your bed with baby
✅Create a safe space with no loose blankets, hair, or pillows around baby’s head.
✅ Plan for co-sleeping (don’t fall asleep on the sofa or with baby on your chest).
✅Let your partner know that you plan to co-sleep and the safety measures needed (above)
❌Avoid children and pets in the bed when co-sleeping
Co-sleeping/bed-sharing is a personal choice. Make an informed decision. Do what is comfortable for you and your baby.
